REVIEW: Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy #1) by Richelle Mead

Synopsis

St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger...

Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.

My Thoughts

OK, so I know I'm late to the game in reading the Vampire Academy novels. I must say, for a book that is targeted at a younger audience, there was definitely a LOT going on in this book, and I loved every minute of it.

I'm sure by now that most people have already read Vampire Academy. And if you haven't read it yet, you should! I won't bore you all retelling the plot, I'll get on with telling you my thoughts on it.

I absolutely LOVED Rose! Her smart and sarcastic way of speaking. Her loyalty to her best friend and charge - to - be Lissa. They shared a strong bond (which we learn about in the novel), making Rose a perfect candidate for Lissa's guardian. Rose had an addictive personality, and I couldn't help but be drawn to her character.

Lissa was more subdued. Being a Moroi royal, she was well known among the students of St. Vladimir's Academy. At times she came across as a little unstable - almost paranoid. But there's a reason for that. Lissa will do anything for Rose. She trusts her wholeheartedly as a best friend should. We also get glimpses of a 'darker' side to Lissa. As the story unfolds, we learn more about this.

Overall I found all the main characters, and even the supporting characters intriguing. They each had an important role to play. Not once did I feel that a character was added to just to fill a space in the story.

The story itself, I thought was fantastic. I was hooked from the beginning. There was always something happening that kept me interested. Like I mentioned earlier, there is a lot going on in this book, but I never felt like it was too much. I can't wait to dive in to the rest of the books in the Vampire Academy series!

I received an ARC from Penguin Books Australia through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
