REVIEW: Deception by Evie Rose

Synopsis

After years of abuse, Roxi is an expert at deceiving the people around her. Everyone believes she has a picture perfect family, with a loving husband and a sweet little boy. They think she resides in a beautiful house and has a luxurious lifestyle, although, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Underneath the facade is a tormented soul, poised on the brink of giving up hope of ever finding a better tomorrow.

Luke’s past haunts him every single day. Not a second goes by without deep sorrow plaguing him. He will never forget what he’s done, he doesn’t want to. No one is more deserving of guilt eating away at them than he is… or so he believes. He spends his time, forever trying to make up for the one mistake that ruined the lives of his loved ones, as well as his own.

From the first time they meet, cracks begin to form in the mask Roxi wears and Luke sees right through them. The only question is, will he realize he’s worthy of love and step in to save her before it’s too late, or continue to think he’s undeserving of true happiness?

**Warning** this book contains material such as domestic violence, rape, sex, alcohol and drug usage. Please be advised it is not suitable for anyone under 17yrs of age.

My Thougths

In Deception, we meet Roxi. A married woman and the mother of a little boy. She enjoys running. She's able to clear her mind, feels free, and it's how she escapes from her life where she suffers abuse from her husband.

Although Roxi is the victim of domestic abuse and is deceiving her friends, she isn't completely weak. She knows that she needs to get out of the marriage, but she wants a solid plan set in place for when she does take that final step. She needs to know that she will be able to support her son and make it on her own.

One day while running she notices Luke. And he notices her. They begin passing each other on their runs everyday, and soon become running partners. Roxi feels comfortable around Luke, and slowly (with a little encouragement from Luke) begins to open up to him.

Luke has his own tortured past (which we learn about in the prologue), and as Luke and Roxi's friendship progresses, they both discover that they may just be what each other needs to heal and be happy.

I really enjoyed reading Deception. The characters were very well developed and extremely realistic. Although I found the beginning a little slow, it soon picked up pace and blew me away. The story was engaging, believable and the emotion from the characters was tangible.

Evie Rose has done an amazing job with her debut novel. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future!

Deception by Evie Rose is due for publication on January 2nd, 2014. I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
